As some language constructs found in "higher" languages are missing,
one may also develop ways to work around it. Whether being familiar 
with many ways to solve a problem is good or bad once you move on to
a language which has the means to do it the "proper" way, I can't
judge.

(but I can see from some of my friends' programming in C that they 
 were brought up on another language and not always take the shortest
 path to solve things -- compared to me, who also was on a Basic diet
 during my first eight years of computing but think I better use the
 means and resources of foreign languages than my mates :-)
