Real programmers still get their hands a little dirty in C. Assembly too.

People who know only C and Assembly have decided fewer job opportunities
than those that know Visual Basic and MS-SQL. Do a search on dice.com and
see for yourself.

I wouldn't tie your career to any one language or company. Essentially if you a VB programmer you have already done both :(

C and Assembly programmers are need to do embedded work-- NO one is going to make a programmable coffee maker with a pentium chip inside and windows nt (or ce or whatever).

About the only thing you know about the IT labor market is that it will be unpredictable. I don't doubt your dice.com count... but who is to say it will be the same next year.

One thing positive about c is that it pretty well fills its niche without much competition. So if you learn c you won't have to learn another language every 5 years. Another thing is that it is standardized... you won't have to worry about m$ beating linux or linux beating m$.

Dept of homeland security just decided to go with linux last week-- theres a few VB jobs up in smoke right there.
