I need some advice to pass on to somebody. One of my mother's
co-workers wanted a computer for her son to teach him how to type and to
do some basic word processing. She basically wanted it as a typewriter. I
made the recomendation that she pick up an Apple II from the storeroom at
the school they work with if possible.

This may be heresy, but the kid would be better off with a PC. Pentiums are
give-away items now.
Even if you had a lot of software for the Apple II, I'd still recommend a PC
because that's what the kid will use in the real world. Sorry folks, but
the Apple II is a hobbist's computer these days. I think it would be great
if this kid got interested in the Apple II platform in addition to knowing
how to use a PC, but I wouldn't even suggest a Mac (even though I love Macs
too) because the real world is 95% Wintel. Teaching kids life skills is too
important to fool around with.

Well, the "life skill" mentioned above was *typing*
Seems to me that *any* computer can do that. Even more - a typewriter would work just as well.

Imagine applying for a job and stating that
you were an expert with the Apple II. Or going into the computer lab at
school and looking for an Apple II because that's all you know how to use.
Sorry folks, they're gone.
