The only HFS patch I'm aware of is the one that Apple released
semi-officially, which fixes bugs in the HFS FST.  These bugs affect the
calculation of sector addresses on larger HFS volumes.  An unpatched HFS
FST will access the wrong sectors, resulting in file system corruption
and incompatibility with other HFS implementations.
