I remember hearing about that. Initially it was only available on 3.5" disks since it was too big to run from 5.25" disks, but later was made available on 5.25" for users who had a hard drive but no 3.5" drives.
I never had AppleWorks 5, but at one point I had a IIe with a single 5.25" drive and a 20MB hard drive on an Apple High Speed SCSI card. The Apple card and a used external hard drive were cheaper than an Apple UniDisk 3.5 and controller!
