Actually, the PET 2001 was the first REAL 'general' ready-to-run pc - it came with a crt and BASIC built-in.
For every other personal computer, you needed a tv (and a modulator) and the AII didn't even boot into BASIC at that point (and no, dumping one into a machine code monitor isn't exactly a ready-to-run feature either.
I believe you when you say the AII was the only one generally available tho - Commodore's marketing and manufacturing tactics are notorious on the verge of being legendary (in the not-so-positive sense).
