Definitely not so. The external combustion engine would likely have been
the winner but maybe electric would have been popular too.

I've never seen a Stanley Steamer, or a Baker electric car, but I've certanily seen lots of ICE powered cars, as old, or older than either of those.

Either would
have lead to a much less poluted world.
