I long ago did use a modified DOS 3.3 that did use both sides of an 800K 
disk.  On the first 3.5" drive it was drives 1 & 3, if you had a second, 
it did drives 2 & 4.  Don't rememeber which one of the many variants it 
was and it was way too long ago to remember any specifics.  I don't even 
know if I still have it.
