The //c (excluding the ROM 0 version) only works with the UniDisk 3.5.
This is an external drive. The internal drive on a //c is always a 5.25.
This is more rare and expensive than the Apple 3.5 drive because it has an
internal processor and memory to enable it to work with the 1MHz Apples.

The //c+ can work with the Apple 3.5 drive.
I believe it has additional circuitry to let it do that.
I'm not certain that it's on the motherboard instead of the drive,
but somebody reading this will probably tell us.
