GS Memory Expansion

Yes,  those two jumpers give you the four possible configurations, it will not
work without switching them.  As there are four configurations, really turning
off, changing, reseating card, turning on and checking memory will work until
you get it.  
 
But if 256k is off-off, it tends to figure that 1024k is on-on.  Or visa-versa.
 
 
But you do need to switch the dip switches, yes.
