Re: NES - Apple Sprite card

I think the paper about the sprite card was published in Byte issue on LOGO language (circa 1982).

There are code samples in TI 9900 assembly language in TI books indeed. From the chip count on the sprite card, the 9918A interfaces nicely to the Apple bus.

CP/M Editor/assembler? I'm not sure: to develop Z80 assembler programs I used WordStar to edit text files and I built the executable with Microsoft's Z80 macro-assembler and linker. They were very good tools for their times... and they fitted in less than 64K.

If my sprite card works then I will port Charge! to it. That's the first game I played on my ][+. I typed it patiently from an Applesoft BASIC listing published... in Byte and saved on a cassette tape.

Cheers!

Are there any 6502 code samples for that chip? I'd like to try my card but I want to make sure I have a working program instead of developping software on hardware of unknown state. I threw away Ciarcia's article on that chip a long time ago. Dang :-(

Thanks,

I have most of the Bytes ever published. I'll try checking tomorrow, and see if I can find the issue in question.

As I recall the databook tells you how to address the VRAM through an 8 bit port, but I think the only code they use was 9900 code. I do recall that the book made it clear that any 8 bit CPU can work with the 9918.

The Coleco ADAM version of CP/M 2.2 came with an editor assembler (I suppose the standard DRI programs) but also included information on how to program the VDA and it's RAM. However, I no longer have a copy.

My manual on the 9918 is out on loan at the moment, but I thought the lowest level was a pixel-mapped layer.

Certainly, if you did a graphic image in BASIC on either the TI or the Coleco, sprites were never used. The ADAM's BASIC had exactly the same commands as AppleSoft, so that any graphics work done in AppleSoft (that didn't use Peeks or Pokes of course) could be done on the ADAM.

Many a time I typed in Apple programs from Family Computing on my ADAM and had they look exactly the same as the picture of the Apple version. Or, if machine lanugage was used, the same program with different data statements.
