If it was stored in a garage, I'd be concerned that the maple syrup may
in fact be some type of varnish. If that is the case, then you might
want to try gently bending the plastic to see if the stuff might crack
and flake off (you'll probably have to do some disassembly to get to
that point).
Another tactic might be to use a plastic scraper... some cheapo razor
type scrapers come with a plastic blade that won't damage the case.
