These are by no means the same piece of software.  In fact, AppleWorks on
the Macintosh was called ClarisWorks until recently.  AppleWorks was
certainly the best word processor I used on the Apple II, and is one of
the best word processors I have used.  Unlike modern word processors, it
is not cluttered with useless features (IMHO).  FrEd writer was also
quite useful.

That is a bad assumption.  It is rather easy to find software which can
import AppleWorks files (ClarisWorks is one).  Some word processors will
also use plain text with embedded control codes, which make it pretty
easy to figure out what was written.  The most obscure part will be those
strange black disks!
