Re: Using older PowerMac to read/write ProDOS diskettes??

Hi. I recently purchased an older PowerMac(7300/200) to read and write
prodos disks. When I bought this one, I knew that only certain models
can use prodos disks, but i couldn't find any info as to which
model(s) I should be looking for. Using the Apple.com knowledge base,
it states that the PowerMac 7300 IS compatible with prodos...but I'm
really not sure.....i got the impression that apple no longer cares if
the info on the "older" systems is correct or not.

First of all, can any of you Mac gurus tell me if this mac is supposed
to be capable of reading/writing prodos disks? If not, how much of an
older model do I need to get to do this?

On this mac, I cant seem to write prodos disks, but I can read disks
made on my IIgs. When I simply try to copy a file to a prodos disk,
the Mac freezes COMPLETELY. Only way I can recover is to reset (power
cycle). I tried using Disk Copy on the Mac to make the GS/OS 6.0.1
Disks and it seems to work, but my IIgs wont read them at all.....even
though the Mac sees it as a prodos disk.

I realize this could also be a problem with my floppy drives not being
calibrated properly...especially the old IIgs drives. Not sure what to
do in this case.....

Assuming the problem is on the Mac side, and assuming this PM is
supposed to be able to work on prodos disks, can I simply get another
floppy drive to make it work? Is there a specific model # of floppy
drive I'd be looking for? Maybe the drive in my mac isn't compatible
with prodos??

It should have no problem reading ProDOS disks but it may have
difficulties writing to them. Generally the Macs with the auto-inject
floppy drives are considered best.
The Macs with 1.44mb auto-inject floppy drives are:
SE FDHD
SE/30
Classic & Classic II
Color Classic & Color Classic II
IIX
IIcx
IIci
IIvi
IIvx
IIfx
LC, LCII, LCIII, LC III+, LC520 and LC550
Performas 250, 275, 400, 405, 410, 430, 450, 460, 466, 467, 520, 550,
560 and 600
Centris 610, 650, 660
Quadra 610, 650, 660, 700, 800, 900, 950
Quadra 840 may be either manual or auto-inject

If it matters, the Mac has OS 9.2.2 installed.

That may be a problem too. I haven't done any testing but with my 7600
(which was basically the same as the 7300) installing OS 8.0 or later
and later locked up the 7600 any time I tried to format or write to a
ProDOS disk.
My Quadra 950 (040) running 8.1 happily writes to ProDOS floppies.

The IIgs is a Rom 01 with an SHH MicroDrive Turbo, Sirius RAM card
(8megs) and a single 3.5 drive.

I'm trying to install 6.0.1 to the hard drive, but have misplaced my
disks. I know I can probably buy another copy, but want to use a Mac
to be the middle man between the internet and my IIgs. It's so easy to
get files back and forth that way.

Do you have any version of GSOS, maybe you could Appletalk the
the IIgs to the Mac which would allow you to transfer files
