I tracked down where I read about this problem:

discQuest CD-ROM Drive & SCSI Interface Compatibility List
Manufacturer      Model      Apple High Speed SCSI       RamFast SCSI
Apple            CD-300            *1, *2, *4               *4
                    (Sony CDU-8003 mechanism)
*2 - Must reboot computer to put in a new CD.

Maybe it just applies to the discQuest program.
When I read it, I thought it applied to CDs on a CD-300.
But, I did not have this problems with either the CD-300 or CD-600.
