null modem transfer

At one time I could do null modem transfers but for some reason I can't
make it work now. I can still transfer with ADT.
I haven't changed any hardware or software that I can think of.
I'm using a ROM 00 GS with MMGR.
A rev B iMac with iPort serial card and Appleworks 5 (Mac).
I've tried a different program on the Mac with no change.
I't will start to work then return a "lost carrier" message
after a few blocks.
Tried every speed I can.
Any tips?
