Re: IIGS -> VGA: Success!
I am going to upload pictures to the web soon, of both the cable, and the
display. Stay tuned a couple of days.
One thing I must say though, which I still am working on, is fixing the
jaggies. What I mean by this (and it's hard to see in the pictures I will
upload, since they are all still shots, and this is really only visible if
you see the successive images produced) is that vertical lines are a bit
wobbly, meaning the borders are not quite well pronounced always. Most
vertical lines have a tendency to get a bit wavy. It's kinda like the
picture at the bottom of: http://atarilabs.com/meat/2002/0208_xrgb2+.shtml.
The effect is not terrible, but it is a bit irksome. I am not sure what is
causing this, but my current theories are:
1) My cable is too long. I wasn't paying attention to the length until now,
when I realized that it must be about 7 or 8 feet! Maybe the signal is
getting degraded. I used a very high quality video cable, with separately
shielded R, G, B cables, as well as a thoroughly shielded outer layer, but
still 7 or 8 feet is a bit excessive (not to mention that it gets in the way
since it's too long!)
2) I am using an LCD screen, not a CRT. The makers of the XRGB say they
won't certify its operation with LCD displays.
3) This is a limitation of the XRGB2-plus, in general or with IIGS video.
If you read the URL above, the author of the review says he thinks this is a
limitation of the unit. However, he also says that it only seems to affect
the menus, not the regular video. But he's using video games as his test
case, which maybe don't have the number of distinct vertical lines, so maybe
it's not as visible for him?! To test this, I have ordered an XRGB2 (the
pre-plus model, which according to the reviewer above does not have this
problem.) It is no longer made, so I bought it off of Yahoo Auctions Japan
for around $80.
4) I should build a signal booster/amplifier, as I mentioned in a previous
message in this thread.
