As you have learned, magnetic media is not stable. It goes random over time.

Anyone who is storing stuff on magnetic media should rewrite it every couple
of years and also keep several backups.

I hope someone at NASA has done something to preserve the many miles of
probe data stored on magnetic tape all those years ago.
