Merlin 8 is an updated version of Merlin Pro. It includes both DOS 3.3
and ProDOS assemblers. The DOS version works in 64K, but the ProDOS
version requires 128K (and has more features).
Merlin 16 is an updated version of Merlin 8 with yet more features and
considerably improved performance (about five times faster), but it
requires a 65816 or 65802 processor, i.e. a IIe/IIc with 65802 instead
of 6502 or 65C02, or a IIgs. Merlin 16 only runs in ProDOS-8. It
supports writing 16-bit (65816) and 8-bit code, but its support for
writing native GS/OS applications is rather limited.
Merlin 16+ is a IIgs-only assembler which runs under GS/OS. It is about
twice as fast as Merlin 16, and has a lot more support for writing
16-bit applications (but still supports 8-bit development).
