The Merlins are supposed to be freeware now. Also Ninjaforce has an assembler on their website that's free to download

What's the best 8 bit assembler that can still be obtained these days

I'm finding the built-in mini-assembler nice, but a little limited. ;)

Is there docs for Merlin Pro 2.43 available somewhere? (mostly interested
in how to use the editor.)

I found Merlin Pro 2.43, but that appears to be on a DOS 3.3 volume.
Anything comparable that lives on a ProDOS volume?
