This is the way that normal news distribution works (except for archive
sites like google).

Each news server sets its own rules for how long articles are to be
retained in each group. These rules are typically chosen based on the
expected volume of articles in a group, trading off time, popularity and
storage requirements.

If your news server isn't keeping articles as long as you would like,
you have three options:

(a) Ask them to keep the articles longer in specified groups. They
might or might not be prepared to honour this request.

(b) Check news more often and/or use offline news reading software (or
run your own news server for your own use) where you can control the
amount of time articles in a particular group are retained.

(c) Switch to another news server which keeps articles for longer.

Each article can also have an explicit expiry date, which may cut short
the time that the article will be retained on each server (in some cases
it might allow the article to be kept longer).
