Couple of years back we set up a Mac SE-30 as a server and hooked up a
room of IIGS (Rom 01 and Rom 03) machines via AppleTalk. All of the
IIGS's could boot from software on the SE-30. Once up and running -
the GS's could see a ProDOS partition on the SE-30 and select Apple II
programs to run - or an HFS partition with IIGS software. We also set
up some folders on the SE-30 as Write/No-Read as "Drop Boxes" for the
kids to submit their work to the lab instructor.
Used OS 7.5 on the SE-30 and 5.0.4 on the GS's. No use was made of
AppleShare for the Lab. The IIGS's are now stand alone and booted by
5.0.4 3.5" diskettes as needed. Found the wiring for the machines was
to fragile for a room full of kids. It's done in a daisy-chain. So,
if the first GS has a wire problem, the 20 following it are dead until
it's fixed.
That lab is also now half IIGS (about 24 machines) and Mac (about 20
machines). The elementary students are using the GS's and the middle
school students the Mac's. Possibly this summer the Mac's (LC580's -
gotten for a song and a couple of dance steps) will be wired into the
schools ethernet network and set up to use the school-wide AppleShare
system. That is running v6.3.3 on a PM 7300 with an accelerator card
and pair of ethernet cards. One card supports the in-school LAN, the
other is the gateway to the internet. The advantage of being on
AppleShare v6.3.3 is that is supports any PC machines in the school
without extra software like PC/MacLAN being added to each PC.
