I musta did a couple hundred of them drives many years ago when I had my own
shop. What I always did was take a heat gun to the areas where the grease was
and heat up the goo to make it soft again. Then I'd take the acetone and
Q-tips to it and get as much as I could out. Then I'd use a thick oil and work
it into the mechanism while it was still pretty warm. I'd work the mechansim
many times to get the oil into all the nooks where the old grease was. never
had one come back after that.
