True enough, the Sony 1.44 drive mechanisms are a best option for
replacing the 800k mechanisms. Although the Sony drives match exactly,
the drives with the black plastic door will work out side of the case.
I recently made a test rig for checking out super drives. It consists
of an old case from an 800k drive sitting open on my desk. I can plug
in any Mac drive to test it. So far all the drives have worked,
including a drive with a black door. This drive is the Mitsumi
MF355F-592MA. Obviously this drive will not effectively work inside a
standard case, but the mechanism does work as a 1.44/ 800k drive. If I
recall correctly, electronic eject button on the drive will not
function, but you can trash the disk in GSOS and the disk will eject.
There is of course the physical eject too.
Thankx,
Ed
