I looked at it a couple of months ago

The ROM code uses code aparently uses Appletalk to directly read blocks off 
the Mac disk that contained 'Fizzy'

Fizzy is a short simmilar bit of code that would then try and allow logon 
to the AFP Server containing the system files.

That part of the implementataion should have been the hardest part, but 
even when I used a real Mac to start the boot process, the GS didn't seem 
to want to use the system files from a Linux AFPServer. (even after I 
played with the netatalk Auxtype bug)

I gave up since it was just something to play at since I have a hard disk 
on my GS anyway.
