Question about Sider HD's

I had a stupid moment today. I have a Sider HD that I decided to pull off of
bookend duty and put it back into active service. I hooked it up to a flaky
Apple II clone, turned the drive on and nothing happened. I was afraid the
unit was dead but after completely disassembling the unit, and the clone, and
making a huge mess of my kitchen... I figured out that the computer has to be
turned on before the Sider is turned on. Geez, I felt like a the biggest
idiot.

I have a question though. When I turn the computer off, the HD spins down
too. Is that the way it's supposed to work? Can I leave the HD in the
powered-on position or should I turn the power switch off when I'm finished?
The drive seems to be off but I'm not sure if it's only waiting for me to
leave the room so it can melt down and burst into flames. Is the drive unit
really powered off when the computer is turned off?

Thanks.

E.
