If you are working in Windows or have access to an MS-DOS emulator you may
wish to explore a different approach... one that in fact supports round-trip
editing of DHGR graphics.
On Tuesday, November 20, 2012 I posted the following announcement to the
comp.sys.apple2 and comp.sys.apple2.programmer newsgroups:
Subject: Windows (MS-DOS) Utilities for Apple II Double Hi Res Graphics -
2012 Update
The Apple Oldies Graphics Page at http://www.appleoldies.ca/azgraphics33/
has been updated with the following revised and new files and utility
programs:
Using Windows to Create Color DHGR Files (documentation)
http://www.appleoldies.ca/azgraphics33/UsingWindowsToCreateDHGRFiles_November2012_Final.pdf
Using DMONO.exe to Create Monochrome DHGR Files (documentation)
http://www.appleoldies.ca/azgraphics33/UsingDmonoToCreateMonochromeDHGRFiles_November2012_Final.pdf
The following PC-based programs supporting "round trip" editing of Apple II
DHGR color and monochrome graphics are included in the 2012 update:
BMPA2FC.exe - converts color PC based graphics files to color Apple II
Double Hi-Res graphics files.
A2FCBMP.exe - converts color Apple II Double Hi-Res graphics files to color
Windows BMP graphics files.
DMONO.exe - converts back and forth between monochrome BMP and monochrome
Apple II Double Hi-Res graphics files.
These updates are available as either individual updates for the Aztec C
Cross-Compiler Apple33 DOS 3.3 Distribution or are also included in the
updated Apple33 Distribution available at the Aztec C Museum Website's
compiler page at:
http://www.aztecmuseum.ca/compilers.htm
You do not need to use the compiler to run these utilities:
DHGR Color 2012 Update for Apple33 DOS 3.3 Distribution (includes
BMPA2FC.exe and A2FCBMP.exe )

DHGR Monochrome 2012 Update for Apple33 DOS 3.3 Distribution (includes
DMONO.exe)
