i've got it working!

Thanks go to Michael, who gave me some specifics on VGA and NTSC i
hadn't found on my own yet. armed with those and some additional
research, i poked around some more online.

in short order, i found that SwitchResX could enable a set of
resolutions and refresh rates on the mac that aren't enabled by
default. namely, NTSC and PAL refresh rates.

now to clean up the boxes, build a little enclosure for the VGA/NTSC
