Actually, 8 bit IDE was developed AFTER 16 bit ide. It was done to make IDE easier to implement on 8088/8086 8 bit bus PC's.

ALL of the 8 bit drive I have ever seen in the PC world were western digital (or Tandon before WD bought them). WD even made one 40 meg that was switchable via jumpers between 8 and 16 bit modes.
