I feel your frustration.  You are correct: to the end user there
is no good reason.  Perhaps there are good reasons to the service
providers though.  <sarcasm>Companies forcing users to do something
for their own good (such as turning cookies and JavaScript on) is not
unheard of.</sarcasm>
