Nowadays the AM band is dead - except at night, when foreign AM transmissions can be heard. Likewise the only AM radio transmissions here today are those aimed abroad.
Sweden might be an exception, though - here in Germany AM is alive and well, and e.g. parliamentary discussions are generally broadcast on AM only. Also, my mother didn't have any trouble buying a new needle for her record player a few weeks ago. On the other hand, old cars are dying out faster than elsewhere as there are heavy taxes on "dirty" cars, which means driving cars from before 1990 is generally rather more expensive than driving those from the early 90s.
