A 5.25" drive in your PC probably would not help since the hardware on
an Apple II encodes data differently. There are cards which allow you
to read Apple II disks on the PC, and vica versa, but these are not
very common and appear to be rather expensive.
What is useful is a serial card. Does your Apple II have one? Just
pop open the lid and see what is inside (you never know what you will
find inside). If you do not have one, a serial card is a great
investment: you can get disk images to your //e in a jiffy (with ADT)
and even play with the machine online.

Any DOS3.3 or ProDOS disk will do. You can program in BASIC without
either one (simply press <ctrl><reset> when the drive light comes on),
but you won't be able to save your programs to disk.
Good luck,
Byron.
