Mac Classic II Trouble

Hello

I have been to the mac site... what they suggested didn't work -- anyone
have any ideas on what to do with a mac classic II --when I turn it on, I
get a checerboard pattern across the screen and nothing else.  I tried Com +
option + p + r but didn't get a reboot -- was hoping it was a dead battery.
I dont seem to have a startup disk -- any ideas would be appreciated -- btw
when I push the two buttons on the side, it does play a song....
