Re: Apple IIC 2 PC Help!!!
Leonard:
Your cable may work as wired if you cross pins 7 & 8 of the PC side.
You are missing the additional handshaking signals that need to be
present (RTS/CTS) for hardware handshaking on the PC side that telecom
software needs. Try this before reading on.
I made a handshaking modem cable for the IIc years back. IIRC, when I
ran into the missing signals, I wired the DTR/DSR of the IIc into
RTS/CTS of the modem and then shorted the DTR/DSR/CD on the modem side.
This worked pretty slick for my friend. She used a 14.4 modem with this
cable for quite some time.
If shorting 7 & 8 does not work, try this cable instead, it consists of
the modem cable I made long ago and a standard Null modem cable into one
wiring diagram.
Apple 5 Pin PC 9 Pin
Pin 1 DTR ------ Pin 8 CTS
Pin 2 TD ------- Pin 2 RD
Pin 3 GND ------ Pin 5 GND
Pin 4 RD ------- Pin 3 TX
Pin 5 DSR ------ Pin 7 RTS
Pins 1 CD,4 DTR,6 DSR Shorted
The easiest ADT connection I have ever made was shorting pins 1 & 5 of
the IIc, hooking up TX, RX and Gnd (crossed) to the PC and shorted 7 &
8, then 1, 4 & 6. This fooled all the signals and let it freewheel at
9600 baud. Generally speaking, nothing is so slow that it can't keep up
with 9600 baud so i never ran into issues. I tried this just to see if
it could be done, and it can.
If you have any problems following this, contact me off list and I'll
see what I can do. (I own my own break-out box which makes this so much
easier.)
Thankx,
Ed
