Turns out another 30 mins on the phone solved the problem.

It's hard to believe how Apple has vanished from memory of computer nerds.
After about 10 transfers, the last person said try (a different dial in
number) it's an old machine and may do what you want to do.  He had no idea
what it was I wanted to do but that number works and I can now access the
net from my dinasaur.
