That would be a 030 or better machine: Mac II's or LC's minimum with
the possible exception of the SE/30.

Really, I connect to the internet from my Performa 575 using
a proxy server with a cable modem. The Mac is running system
7.5.5 and it works just fine. It is not as speedy as say the Win2k
box the cable modem is on but the speed is quite acceptable.
My recommendations would be a minimum of a Quadra series
or Performa 575/580 or Performa 600 series computer with
at least 32 meg of RAM and an ethernet adapter. The adapters
can be picked up rather cheaply on eBay. I got an LC type
ethernet card for $6.99 plus shipping.
I would also recommend at least System 7.5 or better because
it can natively read ProDOS and PC DOS diskettes. I would
also recommend the installation of Localtalk Bridge to connect
the IIgs to the Mac and the Mac to Ethertalk.
With this setup, I can see both my Win2k box and my Mac.
You will need to install a Appletalk software on the Windows
side of things. I have PC MacLAN running which is nice.
If you want to skip the PC, you will probabally want to get
an older PowerMac with a 601 or a 604 processor that
will give you a bit more power to connect to the internet from
the Mac.
The only thing that I haven't done is to see the internet from the
IIgs.
