   So Apple IIs, Apple IIIs, Lisas, and Newtons would all be on-topic
in this group?

   I don't think you would get this one past the news.groupies if you
tried.  A comp.sys.apple.[apple2 | apple3 | lisa | newton | etc.]
hierarchy with all the renaming implied with the A2 goups might be a
better strategy.  It might not, though, as the A2 posters and lurkers
might not like any changes to their favorite groups.

   I strongly suggest going to news.groups and see what they say to
get the lay of the political land, so to speak.  Knowing what seems to
be acceptable to them would be a good place to start for drumming up
support here.
