Well, I'm willing to do some further experimenting using Apple-branded
drives only (no spvhd). But, so far I have not been able to get more a
total of four drives recognized on my IIc +.
I finally found a reference about Prodos 8 prior to version 2.0.1 don't
recognizing more than 2 smartport devices:
http://www.1000bit.it/support/manuali/apple/technotes/pdos/tn.pdos.23.html
This is confirming that only four devices could be seen by the Apple
2c+ when
using Prodos 8 version 1.x.x.
The maximum number of (storage ?) devices managed by Prodos 8 seem to
be 14
according to the technical note.
What continues to be confusing is that my IIc + is managing a total of
(4) devices on the slot 5 SmartPort with ProDOS 1.x. That tech note
implies that two should have been the limit. It's mapping S5,D1 S5,D2
S2,D1 and S2,D2.
Citation from Steven:
[When P8 comes up, as many as three virtual disks will be recognized
(assuming you aren't using an ancient ProDOS 8). ]
Now, I'm really confused too...
So, I did some tests and I'm sure of the following:
On my //c (not +) under prodos 1.x.x, I'm able to see the internal 5.25
drive, the external 5.25 drive, the ramdisk, and up to four virtual drives.
Using Prodos 2.0.x, I can see all devices.
On my IIgs ROM01 under prodos 1.x.x, I see the two Apple 3.5 drives, the
5.25 drive, the ramdisk, and one virtual drive.
If I remove one Apple 3.5 drive, I see one more virtual drive.
Using Prodos 2.0.x and GS/OS, I can see all devices whatever the
configuration is.
So, under prodos 1.x.x, the //c+ seem to work like the IIgs with one
Apple 3.5 drive, allowing only three virtual drives to be used, and I
guess only two virtual drives if two Apple 3.5 are connected.
Have you tried Prodos 2.0.x ? If you don't see more drives with it, I'm
damned !!!
As a side point: Are the technical notes not so accurate ?
