I've seen very few of that sort of post, if any. And those are still much
shorter than give out Mac help.

Those who have raised that issue here on this newsgroup have pointed out that
they have to download ALL messages. Even at at DSL speed, that can be more than
a second or two. Further, many phone companies charge you for a full minute if
you only use a second. TransAtlantic calls can cost over a $1.00 a minute. Calls
to Australia or southern Africa can cost upwards of $3.00 a minute. Perhaps some
of the non North Americans could enlighten us as to what it costs them to read
this stuff.

You are assuming that all newsreaders can do that. I don't know either way. I'm
a bit doubtful that the newsreaders on my ISP's shell can do that.
But, the main point is still the same. If people will be good citizens of the
`Net, then such need not be done. And being a good citizen means sticking to the
topic, and/or keeping the comments short.
