At first I suspected that, but everything checked out okay as far as the
chips on the main board.

I did insulate the bottom surface of the chassis with strips of plastic
sheeting, and insulated the motor and drive circuit board as well. (The
shielding doesn't cover the bottom of the drives in the //c s I have.)
The cap was touching the drive chassis on the side, just above the
insulation, but this probably wasn't the original cause (I could have
bent it over last time I had the //c apart.)
I didn't install it in the other //c, just connected it and still it
shorted most of the time and didn't read/write otherwise. Now that I
remember, it did this a couple of times likewise in the original //c.

The problem is solved with a replacement drive, but if anyone has any
ideas what to look for in the old drive I'd like to salvage it.
