It seems that using a mouse, at least with a //c that has a Zip Chip
installed, is sometimes problematic.

As I mentioned earlier, Beaglewrite didn't take advantage of the Zip
Chip (except for the prompting "beep.") When I choose not to use a mouse
(Beaglewrite asks during loading) it runs at 8MHz. Another program that
has given me trouble is Quark Catalyst; it vapor locks if I choose to
use a mouse.

I tried switching to other model Apple mice to no avail.

So I guess there's some kind of conflict in the mouse firmware. Is there
anything that can be done to get around it?
