Oh man, do I hate to tell you this... but removing the cover of that hard
drive has probably permanently destroyed it.  Of course, it sounds like it
was about shot anyway, not unparking the heads properly... but hard drives
are sealed to prevent dust and dirt from getting inside them.  Breaking that
seal almost guarantees that it will never work properly again.
