I've had some success by mounting an NT share on the Mac and going from the
IIgs to an alias of that... Sometimes the shared-alias stunt works, but
direct connections from a Iigs to an NT server haven't worked for me either.

It *is* true, even with a hardware router. Your theory might well be right,
although I don't know why the protocol is acting up.
