I'll make it short and sweet:  Go to region19.fidonet.cc, and take a look.  
While this hobbyist network originated in the BBS community, we're still alive, 
and evolving to have nodes that run from DSL, cable modems, etc.

LORD is still a popular door, and while I no longer have a public BBS available, 
I do play certain door games on the BBS software. :-)
