Actually the current round of Macs have some CHRP stuff in them.
I know it shows up in the ROM stuff.

As for the Mac cloning, Apple couldn't afford to continue bleeding
cash while the Mac market worked itself out.

A major problem in all of this was that the high end chips were in
short supply, so someone like Power Computing could put out a few 
machines and people would be happy with them.  Apple would try that and 
people would get pissed at them because there wasn't enough of the fast 
Macs to go around.  I know of a few people who did that.  Tried to get 
the faster from Power Computing, couldn't because they were out of 
stock, so went with the next model down.  They never would have 
considered doing that with Apple...if they couldn't get the Mac they 
wanted, they went elsewhere.
