Wasn't there a time where they tried to do just that?  The
PowerPC chip was a joint venture comprising of Apple,
Motorola, and IBM after all.  It is interesting that just a
couple of days ago, I saw my first PowerPC powered IBM
computer in my company.  I didn't realize what it was
until I thumbed through the manual, having always
assumed it was an x86 PC.

Inside the manual was a schematic of the motherboard
complete with SCSI port and the PowerPC processor.
It is a CHRP board: common hardware reference platform.
This was the standard that bombed after Apple pulled
out, leaving all the Mac clones plus IBM and Motorola
holding the pieces.
