Re: The Apple ][ was cool!

My girlfriend has a computer with Windows 98. I tried to format a
3.5" disk on it yesterday. The disk was damaged so it wasn't possible to
format it. The operating system got locked during the time it was trying
to read the disk, and it took a while for it to realize it was unreadable.
That would _never_ happen if you tried to do the same thing with WB 2.1 on
the Amiga or FreeBSD! The same thing happened when I was trying to read a
bad CD. Windows 98 got locked but FreeBSD didn't.

While I am not here to defend the Windows OS and put down Amiga OS ( I
actually like Amiga OS a lot and used it for years until my Amiga hardware -
and the OS - was not up to the tasks I needed for college) .. I feel I must
say that the Amiga OS did something which I consider far worse. Does this
look familiar:

READ ERROR on BLOCK 1154 - OKAY OR CANCEL
*clicks CANCEL*
READ ERROR on BLOCK 1154 - OKAY OR CANCEL
*clicks CANCEL*
READ ERROR on BLOCK 1154 - OKAY OR CANCEL
*clicks CANCEL*
repeat 40 times. Finally try OKAY to see what that does ... repeat 40
times.
Eject the disk so its quit trying .. requestor shows "You MUST replace
volume (xxxx) in drive DF0:"

Then, sick of the whole ordeal, close all programs, eject disk, and hit
Cntrl-Ami-Ami ......

Thats a bit more annoying than the OS being slow for a few minutes to me.

And don't even get me started on the Amiga invalidating hard disks at will
and taking hours to revalidate them so they worked correctly, even with
DiskSalv .......
