I believe you have that backwards. The 816, like the 8088 was 16 bit,
internally, but when it came time to talk the outside world, they do it through
an 8 bit wide data bus.
You said something similar about the 386 SX vs DX (does anyone remember that
the first 386 was a "DX" but didn't carry the initials because there wasn't an
SX yet?) Both chips are 32 bits internally, but the SX (like the 68000, and the
80286) spoke to the outside world through a 16 bit bus.
