Re: IIgs Inquiry...Can any Apple Guru's help me out?

IN#2 is simply the Apple II's way of saying: "get input from slot 2", slot 2
typically being where your serial card (or modem port on the IIgs) is
installed. This command works on a diskless boot, or from DOS3.3, or from
ProDOS. That said, since you are trying to send a set of commands to the
Apple II, and some of those commands (probably) depend on DOS3.3, the
process will ultimately fail for reasons other than your serial link.

So you still need DOS3.3, but you can still test the serial link while
trying to find some disks.

Now, if you are not receiving plain text on your Apple II (it should look
like a bunch of commands, and a whole slew of hex digits), odds are the
communications parameters on your IIgs and PC don't agree, or you need to
add/remove the null modem adapter. To change the communications parameters
on the IIgs, enter the control panel and look for the modem settings (hold
down "option" while turning on your machine to get to the control panel).

Experiment until you find some reliable settings. I usually bump the speed
down a bit, because I don't care about speed (hey, it's an Apple II) and
prefer an error free transmission over babysitting the machine. Which is
a good reason for using Kermit on an Apple II, if you can't afford Proterm
or Spectrum. Most of the other comm apps seem flaky, or I don't know how
to set them up properly. But that's just my plug for free software. ;-)

Good luck,
Byron.
