Actually, a cynic would suggest that Billy boy did that just so that he
could point at Apple and say "look! I *said* we had competition in the
O/s market!". In fact, several have said that already... =-)

Not really true, the UK management (and most of the other branches)
tried buy-outs, several other companies put in bids and in the end Escom
paid a fair whack for the works and tried to make a go of it.
